Objectives and Research Methods - Flow Curve JbyF

The main goal is to provide a standard with respect to flow curve identification required for accurate simulation of joining by forming processes. Currently, different material tests are conducted to acquire post-necking strain hardening of sheet metal. This project aims at clarifying the choice of the required material test to achieve certain simulation accuracy. At present, there is no scientific and industrial agreement on this subject. The current situation hinders the development of innovative solutions in joining by forming. Standardization can be expected to reduce the time to market and the cost of new applications. It will help SME's to quickly responds to joining problems with an increased accuracy.

The project aims to consider the following main topics:

  • Standardization of methods for determining flow curves used for FE simulation of mechanical joining processes (clinching, self-pierce riveting)

  • Guidelines based on well-known material properties (e.g. r-values) to perform adequate material modelling in joining by forming operations

  • Influence analysis of flow curve on accuracy of geometrical formation of the joint as well as mechanical performance
